The destruction of this specific compressor happens over several seasons through a distinct mechanical and chemical process:

1. The Winter Heating Reverse Cycle
When a heat pump switches to heating mode during winter, the roles of the indoor and outdoor coils reverse. The outdoor unit now acts as the evaporator, absorbing heat from the cold outside air. This process creates massive amounts of condensation directly on the outdoor components.

2. The Acoustic Blanket Trap
To keep systems quiet, manufacturers wrap the compressor in a dense sound-insulation blanket (insulation wool). In a high-humidity coastal environment, this wool acts like a sponge. It absorbs the winter condensation along with airborne salt particles, staying continuously soaked and salty for months.

3. Accelerated Shell Corrosion
Steel, salt, oxygen, and constant moisture cause rapid oxidation. The compressor shell effectively sits in a wet, corrosive bath hidden beneath the insulation. Over time, deep pitting rust eats away the thick steel walls of the compressor.

4. Pressure Defeat and Exploded Shell
A compressor operates under high internal pressures. As the metal shell thins out and loses its structural integrity due to rust, it reaches a breaking point. The weakened steel can no longer contain the internal pressure, leading to a violent rupture that tears open the casing and destroys the internal motor.
